Throughout the school year, head lice is a major concern amongst the administration. Nowadays once every other quarter kids will line up at the nurse’s office to check for head lice. Your doctor will likely suggest a medicated shampoo (shampoo’s are generally easier on your child than the oils or nit combs available in the market).

You can also find creams, lotions, and various other options to get rid of head lice. If by chance none of them work then you will most likely end up back at the doctor looking for more answers. Lice shampoos are by no menas a homerun, often a first attempt to kill lice does not take. This is often because people take care of the obvious problem (you or your child’s head), but not the second important part of the problem (around your house).

A good place to start is by washing the bed linens, clothes, comforters, and anything else in hot water. This will kill off any existing head lice on them. Granted, these little insects will only live for a short period time without blood, but it’s still a good idea. If your family uses brushes, combs, barrettes, or anything else in the bathroom that is similar, soak them in rubbing alcohol or a mixture of baking soda and water.
